WasteMatch

This has nothing to do with food or agriculture, but WasteMatch may still be an important part of running a sustainable business in NYC.

The idea is to gather office items being discarded by one of the tens of thousands of businesses in the area (e.g. a dozen office chairs, 20 filing cabinets, 30 computer monitors). Instead of letting them go into the landfill, WasteMatch makes them available for people to pick up for free or for a low cost.

"Since its inception in 1997, NY WasteMatch has diverted over 25,000 tons of materials from landfills and helped program participants realize $4 million in savings and revenues. In addition, NY WasteMatch has conducted a number of research projects related to materials efficiency and resource recovery strategies for specific industries, as well as environmentally sound business development opportunities."
